September/October Issue Cover

In this issue of Minnesota Moments, we feature two of our state’s most popular winter activities — ice fishing and reading.

Chances are, if you like one, you may not like the other. The two aren’t very compatible.

It’s hard to read in a fish house, and if you’re snuggled up in front of the fireplace with a good book, the last place you probably want to be is on the middle of a frozen lake peering down into the icy waters below waiting for a fish.

For our book story, we turned to Audrey Kletscher Helbling, a regular contributor to Minnesota Moments and an avid reader. Audrey selected a dozen books written by Minnesota authors that are must-reads for any Minnesotan this time of year. Audrey also will tell you about Owatonna as a destination for your next outing.

Our ice fishing package combines the words of several authors. We try to explain the fascination of those who venture onto the frozen lakes of Minnesota. If you are from the North Country, you’ll likely understand. If you come from points south, we’re sorry if our attempts have fallen short.

As always, there are several other stories aimed at entertaining you.

John DuBois, who has been a regular contributor as well, tells us how far he’s strayed from his Central Minnesota roots when it comes to buying denim.

We also bring to our food pages Bonnie Hall, a delightful cook who offers up some mouth-watering recipes. And, you won’t want to miss reading about Jack Weber and his train museum, which is housed in a small shed near his South Haven home.

We hope you enjoy this issue as we complete our second year of publishing and eagerly look toward year No. 3.

Have a great 2006!

Mike Nistler and Diane Wimmer
