Welcome
to a festival of fall stories
THIS EDITION OF Minnesota Moments has a distinctly rural autumn feel as it features a number of topics we associate with fall. First is our package of stories about grain elevators. When Audrey Kletscher Helbling first suggested a group of stories on this topic, I thought it might be a little too much. After all, what can you say about grain elevators? Apparently, a lot! I never realized what an impact these “dinosaurs” of rural small towns have had on many of us. It would have been difficult to grow up in rural Minnesota without having had some contact with a small-town elevator. (See the Glory Days column on page 6 to read about my grain elevator experiences.) In keeping with our rural theme, we’re also featuring Minnesota’s Machinery Museum in Hanley Falls. Ten points for anyone who knew Minnesota had a machinery museum. Give yourself another 10 points if you know where Hanley Falls is. The September/October edition wouldn’t be complete without mentioning apple orchards and the delectable foods that can be made from those wondrous fruits.
You may notice a few changes on the pages ahead. Co-publisher Diane Wimmer has decided to step down from her role with the magazine. We wish her the best of luck and thank her for the time she devoted to this publication. Also, dwindling ad revenues have forced us to reduce the number of pages we are printing. We hope to increase the number of pages in the future, but in an effort to continue publication in the short term, we felt this was the wisest business decision. To those advertisers and readers who support us, I say thank you. To those readers who know of others who may be interested in subscribing to Minnesota Moments, or advertising in it, please let them know that we ’d appreciate their support as well.
